Hailed as the 'last great Colorado ski town', Crested Butte is my favorite mountain town in Colorado, and an adventurer's paradise in all seasons. By taking a detour from the I-70 traffic and traveling along Highway 285 instead, you also have the opportunity to relax and avoid the hustle and bustle. With plenty of hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, fishing, and good eats, Crested Butte is a destination to satisfy any visitor.
Destination Map
Crested Butte is about 4 hours from Denver, on Highway 285 and then Highway 50. In the winter, Monarch Pass can be a bit difficult if heavy snowfall persists, but manageable. You can also fly into Gunnison Regional Airport, which offers connecting flights to a variety of destinations across the US.

The main town area of Crested Butte is separate from the ski resort. Though both are great options (and I have done both) I would recommend staying in town, as the mountain express shuttle expediently moves people back and forth from the two for free.

Things to Do
Mount Crested Butte has some amazing terrain, good annual snowfall, and not too many people. The expert terrain on this mountain is true to its word, and you can really push your limits here. Make sure you stop at the Ice cocktail bar mid mountain for refreshments after you have done a few laps on the High Noon T Bar. Typically at the beginning of the season, they offer a 'red card' deal that gives you 2 day passes at a discount. With the recent Vail acquisition, it is unclear if this will change going forward.
If you have always wanted to give the sport a try, without the burden of purchasing all the equipment- this is your best option. Enjoy a peaceful day along the river learning a new skill. Most areas are catch an release for beginners, though you can take home the big one too!
An incredibly scenic hike that takes you through some classic Colorado views. Whether you do one way, or return trip, this trip is worth the experience. Starting the hike from the Crested Butte side is a steep climb, but much faster than starting from the Aspen side. Shuttles are available on both ends, and the Snowmass Wilderness Area has backcountry campsites if you would like to stay the night. Don't forget to spend some time enjoying the views of Maroon Bells once you reach the Aspen side!
A cozy repurposed cabin just off of Elk Ave, the Dogwood is a great place for snacks and first class cocktails made with refreshing ingredients.
The Crested Butte Nordic Center has everything you will need for a great day on the snow. They provide full rentals for both skate and classic skiing, as well as snowshoes for those less ski inclined. Some trails are even dog friendly!
The Nordic center is located right next to the covered outdoor arena. Skates are available to rent at the nordic center, and there are several free skate and pick up hockey times.
Indulge in Delicious Food
There are many great restaurants in CB. Some of our favorites include: The Ginger Cafe, Soupçon, The Guild, Lil's Sushi, Secret Stash pizza and many more.
Montanya Rum provides an excellent ambience and exploratory cocktails for all types of drinkers. Plus the fresh popcorn will keep you there just for the smell and sweet/salty combinations!
There are plenty of day hikes in the area, whether you head to Lake Irwin, or up Mount Crested Butte. During the summer months, multiple species of wildflowers decorate the grassy hillsides against the backdrop of sharp mountain peaks.
Whether you are a mountain biker or a fat bike cruiser- rentals are available and the terrain is numerous.
Whether you are an advanced practitioner or just getting shared, find a welcoming community at the Crested Butte Yoga Co-op. They often offer free community classes, so check the schedule!
Happy Adventures,
Stephanie
